About Our Area

ORBOST and district

Orbost is where the Snowy River meets the sea. Orbost has the mildest climate in Victoria (more sunshine). The average rainfall is approximately 830ml. This combined with Snowy river silt flats ensures fantastic vegetable gardens. Sailors Grave Brewery is a popular haunt and Orbost has a thriving Cafe Culture with excellent wholesale coffee beans and fantastic sourdough wholesale specialists who are also able to offer retail sales to the locals.  Various Artists from Melbourne perform (Jazz/ rock etc.) at the Exhibition Centre a few times a year to the delight of the local residents. Close by is coastal Marlo where you can enjoy a beer, wine or soft drink on the Marlo Pub deck looking at the river and the sea. Marlo is just a 2 -10-minute drive to various surf beaches. You can still continue on to Sydney from Marlo via Cape Conran. If you are travelling from Sydney; you can turn off to the coastal road just before Cabbage Tree and drive along the coast through Marlo and along the Snowy River to Orbost.

There are five national parks about an hour’s drive away including the Coopacambra National Park, the Erinundra National Park (a park with very old growth forests) and the Croajingalong National park on the coast. This park is home to the second of four rural schools which services 170 secondary colleges in Victoria – a 9 week coastal experience for students.

Nearby Cann River has Lind National Park and Alfred National Park on its doorstep.

We have one of the best multi-purpose services (hospital) in Victoria. Awards include occupational health and safety and hygiene.

The township of Orbost is known for its friendliness, inclusiveness and community spirit. It has a community garden. On Christmas Eve the main street is closed off. The Chamber of Commerce and the service clubs provide activities and food and Santa brings lollies and an icecream for every child. After the festivities the entire town walks down to the park on dark towards the river to watch the fireworks and later all age groups mingle and chat.
